| I went for Baldur's Gate. First game for me where the characters felt totally believable. Meeting Imoen was an annoying joy and Minsc and Boo were off the map^^ Ahhh... Those were the days. Though KOTOR and DA:O provide(ed) equally good days I imagine. |

| If you would made a poll about which game manufacturer we like most, it would be a very easy choice for me. But selecting from the games like Baldur's gate, NWN, KOTOR, Jade empire, Mass effects, DA is like choosing which one from your kids you like more But I voted ME, since I haven't finished ME2 yet, but I love them all equally | |

| Hands down, Baldurs Gate. I still remember Minsc & Boo, they were of the chain. Baldurs Gate, that was ages ago, I wonder if it would work on my computer...

| I voted for Baldur's Gate II, but to be honest its interchangeable with Baldur's Gate as my favourite. The original probably had a better overarching story, more free-form exploration a great (KOTOR-ish) twist. Shadows of Amn on the other hand, made up for a slightly weaker story (in my opinion) with deeper sidequests and better party interactions (not necessarily interactions with the player character). | |

| I have to vote for Baldur's Gate. The game who -along AD&D rulebooks- changed me into a RPer. | |

| I went for Dragon Age: Origins, but I have to say it was a VERY tough choice, one based entirely on my personal experience with the games. I was always a huge fan of BG / BG2 as I was already an avid RP'er when these hit the market and they were a superb visualization of what I considered the Forgotten Realms universe to be like. The level of detail was frankly insane, the VO was great and the characters very memorable. I was also a huge fan of the stunning oil-painting portraits (which were also used in IceWind Dale I % II) as they add class. Neverwinter nights and KOTOR were both excellent experiences for me personally and I enjoyed them immensely, but I was never that happy with the move from hand-drawn animations to 3d-rendered ones, but then again these were 'early days' for such technology and they look less 'clunky' nowadays. Both games had the usual excellent signature BW storylines which made them immersive and hard to put down, something I'm afraid I think was lacking in both KOTORII and NWNII. Then along came Jade Empire and Mass Effect. By this point it was clear to me that BW were putting their isometric/hand-drawn games to bed once and for all which, while it made me sad to see them go, it also allowed me to embrace the new 3d games knowing that they were the choice BW had taken, and I could trust them as a company based on previous games. Luckily I wasn't disappointed, both games made great use of the 3d engines and the graphics were massive improvements. Storylines were as excellent and epic as ever, Jade Empire really delved into oriental folklore (especially with all the spirits, ghosts and small gods) but gave it a BW spin and the martial arts combat was intuitive and exceptionally fluid, easily the best hand-to-hand combat of any game at the time of its release. Mass Effect strode confidently onto the scene with an all-encompassing, epic world-spanning space-opera, grabbing the sci-fi genre by its throat and dragging it up into the light; it did something quite unbelievable; it made a world-renowned and recognized Sci-fi Universe that was as detailed and stunning as both Star Wars and Star Trek and in just a few short years it has joined the short-list of such giants who ride on the tails of these two franchises. It evolved (and some say perfected) the interactive dialog system of all the previous BW games into a truly cinematic experience and the characters were easily some of the best in the games industry. And the ending? Soverign vs the Citadel? Pure gold. - Spoiler:
That leads me onto the last two games I'm gonna mention, Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins. Both are quite similar if you look below the visuals and storyline to consider how the games play out. Swap ME2's Collector Invasion with DAO's Darkspawn Invasion. Replace Sherpherd's "Only you can save mankind" with (Unnamed Hero)'s "Only you can save Ferelden". Replace The Normandy starship with The Camp / Warden's Keep in DAO and well, you can start to see the similarities. Both are beautifully executed games with massive, over-arcing storylines, lush visuals, excellent characters, a swathe of side-quests (many of which flesh out your companions' stories), are not long, cumbersome games but can be played at your own pace and you feel by the end of them that your decisions actually made a difference to the outcome (actually those people who have played the games more than once and tried different routes will know you actually CAN!). Neither game shys away from more sensitive issues such as major moral choices, sex, violence and addiction giving them a decidedly "non-kiddy" feel, and I'm a huge fan of them both and would recommend them to anyone. So why did I chose DAO over ME2? Its a purely personal choice. I love both SCI-FI and Fantasy, but if I'm forced to chose between the two I'll always take fantasy, hands-down. I love the mysterious and the mystical and am happy to accept there are "things we just don't understand", but the cyber-junkie in me will always pull me back to Sci-Fi; the 'Bladerunner's, 'TRON's, 'Running Man's out there never let me stray too far. Its probably why I prefer Star Wars over Star Trek. Its simply that Star Trek is pure SCI-FI, Star Wars is what I consider SCI-Fantasy. Dragon Age does have its faults. I'll not say its perfect by any means; some of the combat can be too tough or too easy, the "sex scenes" are not personalized like they are in ME2 (don't mean that in a smutty way, it just feels "less personal" when each character in ME2 has their own dialog/scene whereas in DAO they just put a different head on the body ), and the fact that they use only a few different body types for NPCs shines through more than it does in ME2 (they both actually do, but its less obvious in ME2) but there is something about the desperateness of it all, the realistically vicious combat (more gibs and blood than laser-blasts & explosions) and I find the non-party NPCs to be more interesting that some of the ME2 ones. "Dark Fantasy" is how DAO is presented, and it certainly is that. If I could pick more than one "favourite" it would be all the games mentioned above. If I could pick only 2 then it would be Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins. But I can't, so Dragon Age: Origins it is. | |

| Those are such very, VERY difficult choices and since I'm not half as eloquent as LW (funny anytime I see that cuz I'm Lastword on another site and I think I'm being refered to), I would have to say a DA:O/KOTOR hybrid. I'm a Huuuuuuge fan of story and KOTOR rocked my world. And DA:O is so expansive, it's scary. haven't played ME yet so I probably just won't vote at all. | |
