Crazy Star Wars Rumours Nixed
Lucasfilm quick to deny gossip about new 3-D trilogy.
by Orlando Parfitt, IGN UK

UK, October 22, 2009 - Some of you may have seen the crazy Star Wars rumours doing the internet rounds this week.

MarketSaw claimed (from a trusted source) that George Lucas was preparing to release a new trilogy of Star Wars movies, and film them in stereoscopic 3-D. The source also said that the success of 3-D sci-fi Avatar would go a long way to determining if there would be more Star Wars movies.

They also claimed that Lucas would not direct the films, with Steven Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola apparently in line to helm instalments. Awesome stuff huh?

Just as IGN was getting cautiously excited however, we saw that AintItCool had quizzed Lucasfilm's PR department about the news. The studio had promptly nixed the gossip, telling the site: 'We do not have any Star Wars theatrical movies planned.'

So there's a 99 per cent chance that said rumours were internet-invented nonsense, but as it's Star Wars we thought we should let you know the latest.

EXCLUSIVE: Lucasfilm Gearing Up Another Star Wars Trilogy In 3D?!?!!
EXCLUSIVE

Jim here. Here is a strong rumor that should whet your appetites! (or sour them if you have had too much of the franchise). I have been hearing rumblings... extremely quiet at first, but now heating up significantly and from a trusted source - that George Lucas is preparing to unleash another STAR WARS trilogy upon us, this time in stereoscopic 3D. This is NOT the TV series, these are brand spankin' new 3D STAR WARS movies.

Yes, the pending 2D to 3D conversions of his six existing STAR WARS properties are still a go as 3D theaters are approaching 3000 (5000 is the number Lucas wants). No word on when this work will be completed.

But here is the shocker: Lucas will be producing and NOT directing these new episodes apparently! Could Steven Spielberg be tapped to direct a STAR WARS movie after all? Yes according to a trusted source of mine! Further, Francis Ford Coppola was mentioned too as a possible director for a future film!

A lot depends on the success of AVATAR this winter - if it takes off like everyone is expecting it to, then you will most likely see three additional STAR WARS movies added.

What an interesting competitive box office landscape that would make over the next 6 to 10 years! James Cameron's AVATAR world vs. George Lucas' STAR WARS world. I could see Lucas getting a little jealous over a successful launch of AVATAR - jealous because it is a fully articulated universe, like his. And if he doesn't act on it - his franchise may well be relegated to a back seat as potentially the records will start falling to Pandora. Heck STAR WARS is still not 3D yet and what better way to try to maintain a lock on bragging rights than to launch into three more in native stereoscopic 3D.

How seriously should you consider these rumors? Well it is coming from a source that SHOULD KNOW. This source is absolutely connected. So odds are it is seriously being talked about at Lucasfilm. Right now. Will it happen? AVATAR will have to hit and hit big and then all the stars have to align properly - all I can do is pass on the info.

Personally I WANT this to happen dearly. I REALLY want to see what the STAR WARS universe looks like in Spielberg's hands *AND* in stereoscopic 3D. You would too, wouldn't you? :-)

Star Wars Movie Dreams
Where might a third series of films take us?
by Scott Collura
January 4, 2010

Every once in a while new rumors emerge regarding a return to the big screen for George Lucas' once-revered Star Wars series. Of course, this talk always goes nowhere and usually turns out to have originated out of some website's desperate need to pull in traffic… or some fanboy's desperate wish to see his ultimate Star Wars fan-fiction come true. (No Greedo/Han slashfic we say!)

And while many of us remain burned, or at least disenchanted, after the Prequel Trilogy, there's no denying that a new series of films set in that galaxy far, far away still stands as a tantalizing prospect, especially if it were to be done right this time (i.e. with certain Bearded Ones handing over the creative reins to young blood). But where would such a series go?

This topic has been the basis of speculation since we all learned (or those of us old enough at the time learned, anyway) back in the late '70s that A New Hope was not a one-shot but merely the first in a planned series of three trilogies. Eventually those three triumvirates got cut down to two three-film sets, but let's ponder today where a new and modern Star Wars movie series might take us…

Luke, Han and Leia Continued wrote:

As Star Wars-struck kids in 1980, fantasizing about the ramifications of Darth Vader's paternal revelation and Han Solo's dire carbonite-encased status and a million other galactic matters, visions of a grand and epic, Excalibur-esque prequel trilogy (if not the Prequel Trilogy) featuring a young Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi danced in our heads. But the alleged third trilogy was a much more vague thing, as foggy in our collective mind's eye as a Force vision on the frozen surface of Hoth.

There've always been conflicting reports on the matter, dating all the way back to the early days of Star Wars' success, with even Lucas himself often contradicting previous statements he'd made about the films, but it seems that this so-called "Sequel Trilogy" (Episodes VII, VIII, and IX) would've taken place some two decades after Return of the Jedi and featured an aged Luke Skywalker training a new order of Jedi Knights.

So let's say that Lucas decided to finally make these three films. How cool would it be to see Luke not only finally back in action, but also in true Jedi form, albeit as an aged, Ben Kenobi type? Certainly Mark Hamill would be up for the role, and since Lucas controls his own destiny, so to speak, when making his films, he wouldn't be required by any studio to jettison Hamill for a more box-office ready star. Of course, if Lucas could draw Harrison Ford back -- and judging by the state of Ford's career lately, he just might be able to -- that problem would be solved anyway (as long as Ford lost the grump factor for a spell). Carrie Fisher, though… well, she just doesn't fit the Princess Leia role anymore, does she? More Penny Marshall now than Leia, she's become sort of twisted if not evil.

Or, why not go the Avatar motion-capture route and create CGI versions of Luke, Han and Leia, giving them whatever look is required of the characters but still allowing for the original actors to play the parts?

The Thrawn Trilogy wrote:

There've been a Bantha's buttload of Expanded Universe Star Wars stories told during the long and oh-so-prosperous years since the original film debuted in 1977. That includes an untold number of books, perhaps the most popular of which are Timothy Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy, which introduced the titular villainous character as well as Luke's eventual ladylove Mara Jade and various other core elements of the post-Return of the Jedi world.

Set about five years after the destruction of the second Death Star, beginning with the 1991 novel Heir to the Empire and continuing with Dark Force Rising and The Last Command, the story is seen by many fans as the one true follow-up to the film series. The thing is, in order to get it shot, our main heroes like Luke, Han and Leia would either have to be recast in order to appear to be the right age, or Lucas or whoever was to make these films could go the mo-cap route here too. Because let's face it: Ain't nobody going to believe that Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher could have twins in this day and age.

Another option would be to go with some of the more recent books which take place later in the Expanded Universe timeline, such as the Legacy of the Force series which has explored the later years of Luke and the gang, as well as their children. This would once again allow for the casting of the original actors in their roles, while also bringing in a "next generation" of actors to star alongside Hamill and the rest as Jacen Solo, Ben Skywalker, et al.

The Bounty Hunters wrote:

Ah, bounty hunters. We don't need that scum!

Or, actually, we do. For whatever reason, Boba Fett and his ne'er-do-well compadres have become almost as popular as the heroes of the Star Wars universe, so much so that Lucas never passes up a chance to include a few in whatever SW product he's working on, be it the prequels (Boba's dad, eh?), the current Clone Wars TV series (Cad Bane, eh?), or a certain Holiday Special (animated Boba, yeah!).

The thing is, Star Wars fans eat this stuff up. And since Lucas is always out to make a billion, we certainly wouldn't put it past him to give his bounty hunters their own movie series. It sounds kind of awful, doesn't it? But again, if he were to take a back seat creatively and give an interesting young director the chance to work within his world, imagine the possibilities. Just as Peter Jackon's faith in Neill Blomkamp gave us District 9, if Lucas were to follow a similar path -- with the box-office solid bounty hunter premise -- the results could be quite dynamic.

Just no more kid Boba Fett stuff, O.K.?

Knights of the Old Republic wrote:

The concept of going back in time to the tales of Jedi from thousands of the years in the past, during the height of the Old Republic's power, isn't new, but it was perhaps best realized in the videogame Knights of the Old Republic and its sequel, Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. This game, if adapted correctly, could turn out to be what many had hoped and expected the Prequel Trilogy to be.

Set four millennia before Anakin Skywalker was even a glimmer in the midi-chlorians' eye, Knights presents a new villain called Dark Malak, apprentice to Darth Revan. Vader-esque in his appearance, with a chunk of cyborg-ified metal in place of his jaw, Malak is getting all up in there with the Jedi of the time period. Meanwhile, the game's player is an amnesiac whose investigation into his/her past throughout the course of the adventure reveals a, shall we say, close connection to Malak and Revan.

The game offered the player the opportunity to follow either the light or dark side of the Force, which was a nice twist and also parallels the pre-existing Star Wars films which of course depicted the rise and fall (and rise?) of Darth Vader. Knights is also chockfull of fun characters who are vastly more interesting and entertaining than just about anyone from the Prequel Trilogy, including sarcastic Twi'leks, loyal Wookiees, and homicidal droids.

An MMO sequel called simply Star Wars: The Old Republic is due this year, which will certainly offer a vast array of characters, locales and situations for Lucas to crib from if he were to go really old school with a new series of movies. Besides, the marketing tie-in here is a no-brainer!

Star Wars Tales wrote:

One of the great things about the Star Wars galaxy is the never-ending stream of personalities who populate the world. Good guys, bad guys, antiheroes, crooks, comedic relief types, hot alien chicks, and so many more, the varied and funky denizens of Lucas and Co.'s imaginations would seem to prove that someone at Skywalker Ranch did too much acid during their younger years.

And that's where this final suggestion comes from. Wouldn't you love to know more about Nien Nunb, Lando Calrissian's mumbly copilot from Return of the Jedi? Or how about giving Wedge his own adventure? The guy helped blow up two Death Stars after all and danced with Ewoks -- he deserves it! Pull from the Expanded Universe too and flesh out guys like Cade Skywalker. And why not give the mournful Rancor Keeper his own movie, detailing his sorrowful journey in life post-Rancor until he finally finds a new love… O.K., maybe not all of Lucas' characters deserve their own stories.

These would probably work best as short films, in a nod to the movie serials of old that Lucas apparently loved so much as a kid, perhaps as preludes to longer Star Wars adventures featuring major characters. And best of all, with the shorter format and lack of name actors, they'd be relatively inexpensive to produce.

The bottom line is, people are hungry for more big-screen Star Wars and there are plenty more stories to tell. To paraphrase Han Solo himself, you're all clear, George -- now let's blow this thing and go home!

January 19, 2010 - George Lucas thinks the time has come for Star Wars to get the 3D treatment.

Although the filmmaker has been looking for a way to revisit the trilogies in 3D for some time now, it appears that the phenomenal success of the 3D sci-fi epic Avatar has finally pushed it closer to becoming a reality.

"[I'm] happy it's so successful, and worked very well in 3D," Lucas told Access Hollywood at Sunday's Golden Globes after party. "Haven't been a big fan of 3D, but that movie definitely improves in (the field of) 3D."

Lucas added, "We've been looking for years and years and years of trying to take Star Wars and put it in 3D ... But, [the] technology hasn't been there. We've been struggling with it, but I think this will be a new impetus to make that happen."

IGN wrote:
Star Wars: Episodes VII-IX

Even before the Star Wars prequel trilogy was completed, rumors swirled across the Internet that George Lucas was planning an entirely new trilogy set after Return of the Jedi. The rumors always vary, but generally Episodes VII-IX are supposed to follow the story of Luke Skywalker as he attempts to rebuild the Jedi order. Some even claim Lucas will adapt the more popular Expanded Universe material such as The Thrawn Trilogy or Dark Empire.

Whenever one rumor builds up too much fire, Lucas or his representatives will generally appear to douse it. Such was the case with the most recent rumor from MarketSaw, which claimed, among other things, that the new trilogy will be filmed in 3D and will be directed by the likes of Steven Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola. Unsurprisingly, Lucasfilm's PR division shot the rumor down like it was a Y-Wing trying to make the trench run.

Another rumor slowly gaining steam is that Lucas has been so impressed with the story and execution of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed that he wants to adapt the game into a film that bridges the two trilogies. Though it's true Lucas was pleased with how The Force Unleashed turned out, rumors of a film adaptation are merely wishful thinking for now.

At this point, fans should probably resign themselves to getting their new Star Wars content on the small screen. Star Wars: The Clone Wars continues to draw in viewers. Lucas is reportedly developing a new kid-oriented series called Squishies in addition to the long-awaited live-action TV series. As for Star Wars in 3D, there may yet be hope. Lucas has announced that he feels the release of Avatar proves the time is right for the two existing trilogies to be converted. Don't be surprised if Star Wars: The Extra-Super-Special Editions hit 3D screens at some point in the next few years.

I do not believe in Episode VII to IX to be released and seriously hope they will not be. That would probably just become another continuity crap.

A force unleashed movie? Well... good idea but is that needed? I mean everything was said during the game, was it not?

Live action TV serie... stil sound as far away as it has ever been. I do not believe this is going to happen anytime soon.

And I don't believe that the six movies will be any better with 3D cinema. Though I'd think it might be doable (and a nice marketing coup)

So basically I'd say this is nothing but rumors reporting... other rumors.

IESB wrote:
IESB Exclusive: The Line Starts Here...Again! New Star Wars Movies Planned
Written by IESB Staff Friday, 22 October 2010 23:30
Don't start packing up your lawn chairs and igloo coolers just yet, but there will once again be "camping out" for a Star Wars movie. IESB has learned some news about the future of the Star Wars franchise.
First, let me remind our readers of IESB's past scoops so anyone doubting the news will be aware. From Joss Whedon directing the Avengers, to the recent announcement of Disney's planned renegotiation of the Paramount Marvel deal, to the countless casting scoops, directing scoops, to our solid sources at Lucasfilm.

Confirmed IESB scoops specific to the Star Wars universe include the first announcement of the PG-13 rating of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, the first word of a live action Star Wars TV series as well as the Clone Wars animated series. Yes, all of these Lucasfilm scoops were all first reported here on IESB.

Now on to our newest big Lucasfilm scoop, ready? George Lucas is plotting to create new Star Wars movies at the ultra top-secret Skywalker Ranch.

This is déjà vu of the mid 90's when Uncle George starting tweaking the Holy Trilogy to gear up for the Special Editions. That was his first step in moving forward with the eventual prequel trilogy.

It's happening all over again, Lucasfilm is already hard at work converting the entire Star Wars saga into 3D which will be released starting with Episode I: The Phantom Menace in 2012. The word from our ultra top-secret Lucasfilm insider is that Lucas has gotten the itch and is already looking ahead into launching an entirely new trilogy in that galaxy far, far away.

What do we know? First of all, these new film will have nothing to do with the live action television series currently in development. That show already has over 50 scripts ready to go and plenty of pre-production time and money has been spent on artwork and storyboards. Once that show goes into production, Lucasfilm hopes to be able to produce at least 100 episodes since that is the threshold for syndication in the United States.

IESB has been told fans can expect the new trilogy after the entire saga is released in 3D which is expected to be complete around 2015 or 2016.

Uncle George's modus operandi has not changed, the plan is that he will self finance the new trilogy after he rakes in an expected $500 - $750 million dollars with the re-release of the entire Star Wars Saga in 3D and on Blu-Ray.

The ideal plan, according to our spy at Skywalker Ranch, is to be able to release a new Star Wars film within 24 months after the release of the last re-re-release (is that right?) of Return of the Jedi 3D.

Too early for story details but one thing that our source is certain about, they will not be prequels but instead sequels. It's not for certain if they will be the long awaited Episodes 7, 8 and 9 but could instead be Episodes 10, 11 and 12 or possibly even further out in the Star Wars timeline. And by giving space in the timeline, possibly even as far as 100 years or 1,000 years in the Star Wars universe future, Lucas avoids having to make these stories "fit in" with what the previous stories have told.

According to our sources, the most likely scenario for the films is that they will exist in the same universe but will not have anything to do with the Skywalker Clan. That story has been told, that starship has sailed.

What has caused this sudden change of heart for Uncle George? Well, besides the obvious possible billions that a new Star Wars trilogy will take in, our source tells us that George has gotten motivated with the success the Clone Wars animated series, the video games and also with the success of Avatar.

Can we expect Lucasfilm to confirm our story? Have they ever? Nope, I am sure that they will spin this or completly deny the story, but we will stand 100% behind our source.

they did deny this, but i think it will comes more SW movies so i think May 2018, May 2019 or May 2020

I'm dubious about any new SW movies being released to be honest. If thats correct then Lucas will be 72 when the last movie is released. It's possible I guess but unlikely. The conversion of the saga into 3-D was bound to happen and I still have faith in the live action series, even though by the sounds of things they're having loads of trouble funding the project.

My vision:

Lucas struggles with the idea of new movies, the problems gives him a heart attack.

In his testament he restrict the rights to the movies to himself or his family.

His relatives wants the money roll, so they allow some producer to pick up the SW name and give them the decent piece from the cake.

The producer gives free will to some good director and army of writers. We have great Star Wars Movies AGAIN!

Lucas: "AFTER my cold dead body!"

Fans: "Yup!"

I just lost faith in George. Sorry mate, even Stalin listened his advisors. Hitler did not however...
