| Any PC boffins out there that can help a PC numby like myself? I've been trying to install LOTRO for about a day now and keep getting a blue screen error. I guess it's not just the lotro install at fault, but my PC. It seems to be when the PC is doing something like installing or downloading anything that takes a while. After a bit I get a blue screen with this error: 0x00000012 trap_cause_unknown (0x00000012 0x00000001 0x00004000 0x00000000) I've googed it but haven't found any help to be honest. Any of you guys shed any light on this before I reformat this PC agian? Cheers. | |

| ah the good ol' B.S.O.D! (Blue Screen of Death)
Can you give us any more info, Nosyd? does it do it only at certain times? (like initiating the 3d gpu for games and what-not?) or does it happen randomly whenever you're doing anything on the pc?
I often find about 90% of all pc problems can be solved by switching off the pc and removing then re-seating the memory and graphics card, especially the machine is moved around a fair bit.
Windows (in its infinate wisdom) loves giving messages with crap-all info in them. Why put "unknown cause"? exactly who is that helping?

| Well, I get about 3/4 the way through installing LOTRO and I get the blue screen. I try and download the client and after about 20mins I get the blue screen. I can't get the blue screen by doing anything else. The PC runs fine untill I try one of the two above. I have a trial version of WOW on my PC. I created a test/trial account and WOW runs fine, no problems. I haven't added anything new to the PC. I reformatted about 10 days ago and have only used windows update and added virus software, not much else.
Should I open up the PC and make sure everything is seated correctly?
Edit: I have only the one GPU CPU.

| If you know what you're doing inside a pc mate, it never hurts to do such a thing...
That said, it does sound like the problem might be lotro itself... I had a similar problem with it on my laptop and when I contacted Codemasters they gave me a "may not work on all laptop computers" stock response so I kinda shrugged, installed it on my desktop pc instead and thought no more about it..
I'm assuming that if you've only reformatted recently that its not a driver issue, as I'm guessing you have the latest directX, graphics and audio drivers..
Are you running XP or Vista btw?

| That sounds like a nightmare, mate. I had real problems with Black Screens of Death running lotro but never a problem on the install. Is you graphics card nVidia? |

| The thing is I've had LOTRO running on this PC for years, including the beta. It just won't run now?
I have an ATI card and I'm running Win XP pro with all the latest updates.

| Hmmmm not sure to be honest mate, I'll look into it and ask around, see what I can find out.
The good news is, at least you're not running Vistard!

| Sorry for double posting, but just a little update. I took my PC to bits. Removed 4 strips of memory, sound card and Graphics card. Gave the whole thing a hoover, carefully and then put it all back. LOTRO installed no problem and I haven't had a blue screen yet. So fingers crossed all is well. | |
