Subject: The D-Day E.P.O.C.H. promotion ideas Wed Nov 03, 2010 6:33 pm
The idea of the topic is idyllic, but I believe that Agency will survive long enough to see SW:TOR opening credits and login screen. I think the best and most complex ideas are created during brainstorming. So we can dump here ideas of future E.P.O.C.H. promotion when the game will be close enough.
So to start:
Here are two IMO best of the best MMO fan movies. Both From Eve, both around the big conflict that shattered the EVE universe long ago. But look at them as an bag of ideas for Agency advertisement video. Especially strange and mysterious first one focused on the Logo, and information noise in the first part of the second one.
Why I love this style so much? Well. 80% of the Guild Videos are just random scenes from Star Wars Movies with Requiem for a Dream/300 music. But this one can be different and unique as E.P.O.C.H. is. It can be done as shattered and incomplete report of someone spying on the Agency, Killed in the background sounds to suddenly spread the silence and fading EPOCH logo... it can be something else.
I just wanted to point interesting direction if we will decide to make a video because of game release.
What do you think?

I attempted a couple of Guild Recruitment videos a while ago and we collectively agreed to wait before we go for it again. Personally, making one now wouldn't have as large an impact as if we did it closer to the release date, since that's when intrest will peak and when people will be looking for a guild (and similarly, that's when a video will make the difference in choosing between two guilds).
That said, we'll need something similar to the second one. The first is pretty easy and to be perfectly honest - boring. It's a long introduction to something that never comes. The second one however is simply epic. You've got it bang on with the music though. Requiem for a Dream is the perfect track, or 300 if we decide to take a more action-orientated approach. The problem with this is that a pre-launch video with gameplay footage will be pretty hard to do.
If we are going to do it now, a mixture of released gameplay footage and the first video would be good. With the new Agent video out we have, quite frankly, perfect material to use (along with the Sith Warrior video and some of the previous releases).

Well I'm in agreement with you both
I think EPOCH would benefit from having a video, but I also think it would be best to wait until hype for TOR begins to pick up again.
That being said there is no reason why we can't start working on ideas for it...
PS: Harl, I think Witya meant to NOT use the music from either Requiem for a Dream or 300 They're two of the most over-used bits of music on the 'net - along with Duel of the Fates
Although I think we do need some sort of majorly epic score, something that will just make people grin - My recommendation is something off the Dawn of War 2 / Chaos Rising soundtrack (I own both so can happily upload any track). Here are some examples:
and this has the kind of creepy vibe that reminds me of Aliens/Predators films mixed with Dark Secrets and Random's OSR campaign
.....and this one has some excellent scope for space-style epicness, my only concern being its a bit too well known and recognised as DoW2 music....but still, its great
In fact you might recognise this from the 2nd Video Witya put up
Of course, it you'd prefer something more insideous and slow building, well there's always the Eldar...

Haha. Me and my skim reading But they're popular for a reason. I can agree that Star Wars music would be cliched in the video though. Still, I am a fan of Dawn of War and they do have quite an epic musical score. Seems like they're a good direction to start.

I like the idea but I'm afraid you shouldn't count on me to do anything in that matter. (technically, I mean)

What I expect to see as promo movies of other Guilds:
-To long movies (2min and longer, boring, Moving over 2 minutes is dangerous even for professional trailers)
-All SWTOR materials cut to pieces (the better option: cut cutscens and trailers, bad option: screen shots ;/)
-materials from SW mixed with letters on black background.
-The same kinds of overused music as pointed before (RfaD,300 bla bla bla)
-All high&mighty words used as symbols of guild and overused on all guild promo movies. (Legion, Squad, Temple, Sanctuary, Vengeance, Army, Forces, Hell, knights, defenders, protectors, Hope, War, bla bla bla)
-very strong impression that all materials where picked up randomly and not synchronized with pathos music in the background. No self-imput like recorded, manipulated voice or self made fanart of any sort.
So crap like this:
(Oh I see - you like SW republic commando demo & cutscenes - yay! thanks for 2:30 minutes of my life)
Or this (Yay! all BioWare random parts of republic videos! over 3 minutes! Score!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Gc6fdtmvm4&feature=related
I think about something not longer than 1:15 ,expressive and intense. Something different, something else. We could think earlier about this, maybe record and alter voices for the video and do something from scrap, then spice it with SW & SWTOR features.

I'd put the timing at around 1.30 to 2 minutes. Anything less is a bit short. I've found some videos that we can cut up and paste to our heart's content.
1) This one has some great Bounty Hunter/Imperial Agent combat, which are our two main classes. Also shows an execution which is a good scene to use.
2) The Imperial Agent trailer. Shows assassination, group removal and interrogation. We should definatelys use at least some of these clips.
3) The Bounty Hunter armour video has some really good combat sequences that we can use, along with the bad-@$$ walk away in the end.
4) The Warzone video is pretty even in terms of Republic vs. Empire, but there are some real gems in terms of Empire class combat moves. Plus the speeder bikes swooping in at the start are a must have.
5) 6 minutes of combat. With so many good moves like roping a target and rocket-punching them, there's a lot of good material to use.

The idea that was born bythis
Let's say that we have guild trailer with in game footage. I know that the ideas are now blurred, but I think it's good to *wink* to the watcher in the end of the movie.
We could make this kind of scene as credits - first with the names of movie makers, and then:
I think it won't be huge problem to get the black cloths/armour for all the guild members in the video (well it's Sith Empire!). We could record the players /walking from cantina on Nar Shaddaa , with close-up on every character with his name underneath, like in movie above.
So cool (I know it will be cool since I saw first timeline) guild movie, credits and then bam - you got SW Reservoir Dogs from EPOCH. I would think "Damn! It could be my Bounty Hunter!"
And another good side is we won't be next guild with too-serious, pompous trailer. A cool, badass, classic motive from Tarantino - great feature that suits only Mercenary Agenda!
Yeah - I know - we don't have release date

While reading through this an idea sprung to my mind. What about short recruitment or just simply - show-off videos Like a random guy accessing secret government documents on holonet, finding out that they are missing. Quickly running away in shock.... and then picture fades and a simple sentence..."Do you got what it takes to be the best programmer ?" And logo of EPOCH appearing in the end. Or a ship full of black market weapons leaving the scene while a government official recieves a credit chit from one of our agents...and again one simple sentence : " Do you got what it takes to be a successful businessman? " with EPOCH logo. These sentences may sound weird...why not successful black marketeer or successful slicer?...Because only someone of extraordinary skill in their field can survive and thrive on the other side of the law and they don't call themselves slicers in public However, I don't know how to realize this idea. I'm not very skilled with making videos, but I'm sure it would need original sequences, not something that was already made. ( Maybe, when the game launches we could find suitable places for short videos like this ) SO what do you think ?
