| Putting Maimai aside for one moment (not really mai, we've kept the land-mines and laser trip wires in place around your personal gaming suite), we are generally a guild of lads and while we'd love to have a few more female gamers join us (heck, some of the female guild characters could have real women behind them rather than guys playing girls!), its quite unlikely that we'll get many more on board even after launch. This got me thinking about the gaming industry and women in general and why we don't see more girl gamers. Sure, most of us know at least one or two girls who do play computer games, but most aren't gamers in the will-play-for-over-8-hours-a-day-and-not-notice-they-should-have-gone-to-sleep-5-hours-ago sense. There are some out there, but they're a rarity. With more casual games flooding the market in the last 10ish years women are starting to join us in this predominanty male-dominated hobby and I thought it would be fun to see what people thought about this. A friend of mine recently showed me a 10min video discussion which I found really interesting. Some of the info brought up is well thought out and very perceptive. Check it out: So what do you guys think? | |

| Personally, hailing from Sweden, I've seen gaming and the term "nerd" (or geek, they are virtually the same word in swedish) go from something incredibly negative to something that people aspired to be and even accepted that they were. The young "cool" people, so to speak, have embraced games and gaming and with the hype that World of Warcraft brought with it in it's recent years many were swept into the game. Many of my friends (not all of them as geeky as I am in fact) are playing or have been playing WoW or Counter-Strike which were the two main attractions when I departed home.
I believe that my own generation and those to come after have been affected by gaming quite racically and bent its image from what it was, something only those who had nothing better to do did, into something that the majority of everyone does. I mean, many times I've engaged and been engaged in conversation with people I've never before seen only because they've been talking about games or because they carry some specific logo or t-shirt or vice-versa.
Girls in gaming are indeed rare, I can't personally say that I have as much knowledge or that I have observed it for as long as some people have due to my not being involved in online gaming as well as gaming for longer than five years (at least not seriously before that), but I welcome them just as much as men playing. I've heard from some female players that they would rather mask their indetity as a woman and pose as a man to avoid gamers swarming over them due to their well.. rarity an the classsical belief of the desperation of nerd society (which in some cases has proven to be true) but it is becoming more and more common for women to participate in gaming through boyfriends playing or just sheer interest.
From what I've experienced (through conversations, interactions and even insults) there are still a major chunk holding onto the belief and idea that gaming and all affiliations with similar things are negative (both men & women) but with the ammount of money and interest being put into the industry and the ever growing loss of entertainment through conventional methods more and more are thinking "Let's give it a look, how bad can it be".
I'm not suggesting that the gaming community is going to, in upcoming years, overflow with female players but rather from my own experience believe that the interest is at least growing and we will experience an increase (even if it is virtually small at first) in female players of games and activities affiliated with the aforementioned.
The field of roleplaying and intense gaming, from my view, is still not somewhere you would find an overwhelming ammount of female interest (due to reasons mentioned above) but it does happen more and more. Whenever I myself enter a relationship I don't play someone else, I openly portray myself as a geek/nerd and attempt to integrate any girlfriend of mine in my world which I have experienced mixed responses to. I'm not trying to convey that I believe that all women have a shared opinion about gaming, it really depends on the individual in question and with the recent increase of computers, technology and gaming in the community more people are likely to be influenced and involved in the latter. I welcome anyone with an interest in gaming to "our world", regardless of gender (way to be ethically correct 36809!) and greet them all in the same way.
That's my opinion anyway!
The video brings up many of the probable reasons and topics that I myself have often discussed and as the video concludes with in paralel to my reply the gaming industry is attracting more female players as we speak but the transfer isn't going to happen overnight. It is true that many games would not appeal to the female audience due to sexist or offensive material featured in the game but there is no general opinion about gaming being for nerds and "squares" only anymore (aside from peer-pressure and from what I've seen) and it's up to the individual if he/she wants to get involved and play a game or not.
Interesting topic Lunar, good job bringing it up!

Don't you know? =D G= Guy I= In R = Real L = Life Anyway, was a very interesting video, I found most of what he said to be very true. The video game industry focus mostly on dudes, with characters that appeals to dudes as well. Then again, I also think that most of us dudes has grown up with toys, stories and interests of genres that automatically draws us towards games, like sci-fi, fantasy etc. I know a lot more dudes than girls that enjoy watching (and has watched for all that matter) Star Wars for example, while girls at a young age (back when we were very young at least, even more so for the older guys here than me) maybe Didn't watch Star Wars, Ninja Turtles and what not a million times. I know a few hardcore girl gamers (one of them who kicks my @% in Tekken 6 all the time >,<), but they're indeed a lot fewer of them than dudes, and even at conventions here in Sweden where gamer girls isn't that rare at all, the dudes outnumber them in front of the consoles 20 to 1. Maybe change has to come from the very ways we are raised for most girls to start discovering the pleasant mysteries of gaming =) Anyway, interesting video, was glad you shjowed it, and good topic =)

| I know 2 girls who really, really like the new Call of Duty, not sure if addicted or not. Either way, there are people out there but they are in rarity. I think games like Beyond Good and Evil are extremely good at appealing to women, but I agree that casual gaming is a good way to introduce people (of all genders) to gaming in general, though to get people in, you have to appeal to them with things that they like. | |

Welcome to the internet where the men are men, women are men and the children are FBI agents. Totaly, well I never saw a female gamer o_O . But two of the grils from my scool ( years ago), wanted to start playing, since CS 1.6 was the most played game they wanted to start of with it, well I gave em the CD (+bot), guess what? Next day they aproched me and asked: "How can you play this thrash? It is boring!" So much to girls in gaming.

Either that or they were just pissed at being beaten online by all the skilled players.

| When I was playing AoC I was surprised how many real women were behind the screen. Of the 20 people I was really close with, 6 were women. And sure, you can always lie about your sex, but you can't keep it up for one year... Of these women, some were good RPers and attracted to our guild or the game for the RP, some were in for the (more "masculine" ?) hack & slash parts and the whole levelling subgame, and some liked both. There was a goth, a nerd, a housewife, a troubled thirty-something, a dominatrix (no really), and an "ordinary girl". There may be less women players, but they are out there and they are at least as diverse as the male players, in my experience. And in the end, does it matter? I remember that I thought of two of the women gamers when I first met them IC: these are *obviously* men playing women, while I thought of two male players playing females that they were actually female. Why? Because the women, unlike the women, did not act according to the dominant female stereotypes! | |

They still were beaten xD

| I personally don't see why this issue gets so much attention. I'm not bashing your thread Dubz, it's obviously grabbed attention here^^. I think the reason is no different from why we don't see many girls/women reading graphic novels or spending most of their money on gadgets. Women typically have different areas of interest than men. They'd rather read a less gorey romance/spy novel and spend their money on a new spring wardrobe.
Before I win 'bigot of the year', I want to point out that I'm not gender stereotyping here - far from it. In my second year at uni doing Games Design there were a few girls on mine and similar courses, hell, I lived with two of them in my third year! And one is a games nut who now works in the industry. But these women are the exception. There will always be women who enjoy typically 'male' past times but most simply don't. That's why there are separate sections at magazine stalls called 'Men's Interests' and 'Women's Interest'.
It's pretty obvious the typically over-sexed wet dream portrayal of women in games is the inevitable result of the industry being the domain of FHM reading, Nutts watching, Playboy fantasizing men. But I honestly believe that (aside from the unhealthy body image/bulimia inducing neuroses it might induce in any girl who might be interested in games and who is exposed to this kind of problem simply walking down the street) it's not that big a deal. And this is coming from someone who prefers his chests made of wood and full of treasure, rather than bouncing out of a holster neck! lol
Which brings me back to my original point (not really, but go with it). Kids of all ages play computer/console games regardless of gender, but few girls carry this interest into adulthood. They can make all the female targeted games they want but with the possible exception of MMOs (where social interaction is the key crossover interest) or party/fitness gaming, women as a group just aren't as into gaming as men. Maybe it's because they grow up and we blokes refuse to! I don't know.
But I don't think the majority of women don't game because they're put off by an industry that doesn't cater to them. I think that typically they'd prefer to be doing something else. |

Amen to that. I oddly have no fear of growing old whatsoever, its growing up that frightens me - when I'm close to popping off this mortal coil I hope to be like "grandpa" from Lost Boys But yeah, all good valid points so far and this thread did exactly what I hoped; sparked discussion in an area important to all of us!

Heh-heh! And since the only pic I could be bothered to find on the NAS which includes the coolest stuff in my lounge (missed off on the last photo) is a christmas one... ...note bottom right. And that doesn't include the crossbow - though you can see the bolts behind the sub-woofer in the last photo. Not that I'm gearing up for life after the apocalypse... Oh my no... lol |
