Ok guys please don't laugh!
The last time a drew something must have been back at school, about 20 or so years ago. I was helping my 7year old daughter with her colouring this morning, and I thought I'd have a go at drawing JJ (Jens Jutoon).

This is what I came up with. I based the look of him on Darca Nyl. A character from the Star Wars comics. He has the rough, hard sort of look to him that I imagine JJ to have. I'm going to try and work on the look more and maybe one day come up with something a little better.

Any advice from you guys is more than welcome, and if any artist out there want to draw him better then feel free.

I gave up on drawing years ago mate, so I'll give no 'tips' whatsoever!

That said, at least now I have an extention of your banner/avatar to work with when I do his 3d model Very Happy

Just check out Darca Nyl, and you will have a basic look of how I imagine JJ. Just with a long trench coat, twin blasters and your Han solo type clothing. Sorted Smile

I was trying to draw something like this:

Looks lovely! The drawing naturally looks like it's bulkiing up Jens, and the shading works really well as well. The only thing I can say is that his brow looks flat, curving the lines on the forehead slightly will effectively solve this problem. Other than that, this is fab stuff, keep it up!

A great sketching tip I was taught at college was to put a bit more emphasis on lines which indicate the "bottom" or "underneath" of whatever you're drawing. It simulates the actual weight and mass something has. This image I grabbed off Google is a good example of this. Note how all the lower parts of the figures (the bottom of the guy's fingers/the underneath of the girl's arms etc.) are given a darker, heavier weight.

Maybe try it out on JJ's lower jawline? You might be surprised at the difference it makes!

Thanks for the advice. I'll post some more once I have something better to show you guys.

Do any of you use a tablet for drawing on the PC? I have a Wacom Tablet, but to be honest I just can't get the hang of it. I'm going to try and persevere with it, but if you have any tips on those that would be great. I have Photoshop CS3, Corel Painter and Sketch Pad (all acquired from work when I was made redundant after 22 years). Anyone recomend any other software for drawing?

Ummm Red uses a tablet unless I'm very much mistaken.

I don't due to lack of space which Is why I limit my 'computer art' *cough* to 3d renders and photoshop touch-ups (oo-err) cos that way I can go one pixel at a time!

Well I think with that grand's worth of kit you're pretty much covered! Haha! You've almost just described my set-up; Photoshop (CS1), Painter X and a Wacom Intuos3.

I've read that Toon Boom is good but I've never tried it for myself. Though it's aimed at animation production I've heared there's some nice drawing tools. But to be honest you can't beat Photoshop's comprehensive package for most design or Painter's perfection for reproducing artistic effects (or the canvas rotation – gods I love that! lol)

What did you used to do for your job, if you don't mind me asking?

We had a family business, a group of companies specialising in passenger transport, travel and logistics. It was mainly based in passenger transportation, corporate travel, event transport, incident management transport and destination management services. We had an IT and advertising/marketing dept at the time. That's where I acquired all the software from. It was quite a large company, but due to many things it went into administration this year. As a family we lost more or less everything. We are just trying to keep onto our home in the hope we can sell it to pay of some debt. But it's a real strain, financially and emotionally. It also doesn't help with my wife being ill. Anyway, that's more or less it in a nutshell. Onwards and upwards!

The tablet I have is only a small one and doesn't take up much room at all. It's a Wacom graphire4.

I see. Well I'm sorry that your company went under, I can't say I have first hand experience of such a thing myself but when I was younger my dad was self employed and his business had to be sold off whilst he was in hospital for his stress related illness. I can now as an adult appreciate the pressure he must have been under and the lengths he and my mother went to to shield their children from it all. Still, looking on the bright side of things – going from riches to rags probably saved me and my sister from becoming terribly conceited! Jens Jutoon Happy-smiley-601

Haha, I have first hand experience of going from rags to riches and back to rags again. I started out with nothing to my name, then after a long while I got the big house, drove an Aston Martin (a 10year old one mind you) and had a comfy life. Now I'm back to nothing again and I drive an old Mini copper. Laughing Oh well, at least I can say I've been there. All I want to do now is try and keep my family healthy and happy. I don't want flash cars or houses. I Just want my family to be happy, and to be real honest with myself. I don't think I was all that happy when I had a bit of money. I have much fonder memories when I had nothing, and life was a lot simpler. I learnt the hard way about what is more important in life I suppose.

Christ, I'm getting all philosophical. Shocked

Perhaps not the best thread to share this information, but it's still interesting and is a learning curve, both for you and your family aswell as an outsider looking into this (I myself see this as an example that money cannot buy you happiness). In any case, the way I draw is by going over drawings in black ink and then scanning them in, then adding colour on a program like Fireworks. Probably both unorthodox and not the easiest.

I'm sure you're right Nosyd. As a child going from a big house with pocket money enough for a new SNES or MegaDrive game every fortnight to a council house with no allowance to speak of for the next few years was a shock but I can't remember ever being any less happy. It's just a shame that my sister didn't get the chance to go to university, dropping out of her A'levels at the time to help out by getting a job.
But in the long run it really taught us the value of money and that more often than not, those that don't have much of it are far nicer people to know! We were really lucky with the area my parents had to move to considering the housing estate was only half council houses, but my mum still lives there (my dad finally being carried off by his stress related illness a couple of years ago at the ripe old age of 62) to this day and has never had better neighbors!
There's a lot to be said for seeing how the other half live but I think that Siddhartha Gautama got it about right! And as long as ones loved ones are close little else seems half as important as it once did.

Haha! Listen to me! Rolling Eyes Dishing out romantic platitudes whilst crumbling under the stresses of unemployment FFS! Jens Jutoon Happy-smiley-8818
