The new swtor.com signature Empty
PostSubject: The new swtor.com signature   The new swtor.com signature EmptyMon Jul 06, 2009 5:08 pm

Hey guys, I was just wondering if any of you had got around to designing a signature that all of us can use on swtor.com yet? The competition is still open and I'm looking forward to any designs you have in mind,, but please remember the rules:

  • Must say "Agents of the E.P.O.C.H"
  • Must include the new web address and suggest that we are a roleplay guild and european.
  • Optional: Can include your name & rank if you wish.
  • Optional: Can include the guild motto "A Smaller Solution to Bigger Problems"
  • NO friggin lightsabers! Fed up of seeing them on sigs now!
  • NO swearing, foolish or abusive comments

As I was perusing through the swtor.com forums actually I found this post which may come in handy:

I'm assuming you're reading this because you want to know how to build an ASCII art/alternate font signature,
and you're a complete beginner. If you're not, it's possible that you may still learn some new tricks here.
This guide can be used for any design , blasters , ships , catch phrases , links,
and almost everything you could want to do with a signature minus using actual picture display.
There is a catch though you have a four line limit for a signature, so it may take a little time to
get everything exactly how you want it while making it fit in the allotted space.

For demonstration purposes we will do a saber.
To make your saber in your sig you will need to build it first, and color code it second.
These are built using Alt +number combos or uni-code characters referred to as ASCII art,
a better explanation than I can give can be found here.
If that looked a little daunting to you don't sweat it, I've placed a few below here that you can copy and paste.
There should be a wide number of possible combination's with this group.
You can also use regular keys like # //// ((( ect.
Also there is full list of uni code characters at the links on the bottom of the page.

[color:a26b="Lime"]1. For the hilt,
[indent]You can do this in notepad or the sig panel.
Arrange symbols/characters to your liking.
If it looks good to you, that's all that matters.
You should end up with something similar to this.

█||||||||(•)█Ξ[/indent]

[color:a26b="Lime"]2. For the blade
[indent]I prefer either █ or ▓ ,
and I like to finish with a ) , your mileage may vary,
now you'll have a black and white version of your saber.

█||||||(•)█Ξ██████████████████████████████)[/indent]

[color:a26b="Lime"]3. Color coding your design,
[indent]if you did design it in notepad, it's time to copy and paste it to your SIG panel located here.

When the sig panel toolbar is showing for you it can be used to color
by highlighting and then selecting font color.

Or you can use the manual method below. There is more control over color and
appearance with this method so it's the one I use.

You will have to place this tag {COLOR=Red] at the start of your colored area,
and this tag [/COLOR} at the end of the last character of the area to be colored,
RED can be replaced with any valid BB color you choose.
A list is in the links at the bottom of this post. Also in this example
I have to replace first and last [ ] with { },
or you would not see anything but red blocks,
so when you type it do not use { or } only [ ]

In this instance we'll color the blade. And we end up with
something like this.
[color:a26b="red"]remember not { or } only use this [ or ]

{COLOR=Red]████████████████████████████████████████)[/COLOR}

Or with Hex coded colors. Note the slightly different syntax.
There is a full list in the link at the bottom of the page.

{COLOR=#FF0000]████████████████████████████████████████)[/COLOR}

Both will yield this result.

████████████████████████████████████████)

You will also need to repeat step three along with what ever colors
you want for the various pieces of your hilt.
It should resemble something like this. Also avoid spaces in the code when possible.
[color:a26b="red"]remember not { or } only use this [ or ]

{COLOR=Black]█||||||||(•)█Ξ[/COLOR}{COLOR=Red]████████████████████████████████████████)[/COLOR}

Or with Hex color.

{COLOR=#000000]█||||||||(•)█Ξ[/COLOR}{COLOR=#FF0000]████████████████████████████████████████)[/COLOR}

The end result.

█||||||||(•)█Ξ████████████████████████████████████████)

Start with two colors then save and work your way up until you run out of room for the 4 line limit.
When you're satisfied with the preview and it all fits without error hit save, and there is your new
ASCII sig.
Keep in mind you can color each individual piece if you desire, but your length can
interfere with the 4 line preview limit. They can be posted, but not saved to the sig panel if they
are too long.

[/indent][color:a26b="lime"] 4. Other common uses, Extra info that may be helpful[indent]
Underlining.
note if you place the {u] switch out side of your color switches the underline will remain white,
if you insert it inside the color switch they will be that respective color. Examples below.
[color:a26b="red"]remember not { or } only use this [ or ]

Before

█||||||||(•)█Ξ

{u]{COLOR=black]█||||||||(•)█{/u]Ξ[/COLOR}

the result

█||||||||(•)█Ξ

{COLOR=black]{u]█||||||||(•)█{/u]Ξ{/COLOR]

and the result

█||||||||(•)█Ξ

Adding links within the sig.

We'll use the hilt from above and add a link within it.
[color:a26b="red"]remember not { or } only use this [ or ]

{url=www.swtor.com]{COLOR=black]█||||||||(•)█Ξ{/COLOR]{/url]

And mouse over it to see the result. Clicking will take you to whatever url you had entered.
Also note that the linked area has a line under it, this can be hidden or colored with the use
of the underline switches mentioned above.

█||||||||(•)█Ξ

Adding spaces,
Since spaces don't work correctly you'll have to use any letter and then color it
the same as the forum background.
This forums background color is #101A2A spaces will be needed for most
advanced gun designs. highlite the space below for an example.

example example example. <<<<Example

In closing I highly recommend you read the links below for much additional information about underlines,
bold, italics, and linking ect, Additional color charts, and a full unicode character list .
This guide and the links below contain all the tools needed to make any signature come alive.
[/indent]

[color:a26b="Lime"]5. Additional Info,Links, and examples.
[indent]
Full unicode chart, many not listed here
Let the whole page load then hold ctrl button and scroll the mouse wheel to make viewing these easier.

Standard colors and Fonts.

Full spectrum Hexadecimal color generator. ,Thanks to Wizzles for this.

BBcode underline/bold/italics..ect..

[/indent][color:a26b="Lime"]6. User Tips. [indent]
I've got to give credit where it's due,

This does indeed help {size=1] and [/size} around the entire design if needed.

And a good tip from Wizzles for saving space.

Here are some other examples I made with a little extra time. Feel free to copy them if you like,
except the one made by Fyurii, you'll need to contact him if you want to use his.

That's one heck of a lengthy post with loads of information so I feel kinda harsh answering it with such a short one....

I'm afraid I'm really not a fan of those "pictures made out of code" signatures, I just think they look tacky. They remind me of the sort of things people send across text messages before they hit about their mid-twenties.

I personally think it kinda sucks we cant make HTML signatures on SWTOR.com but I can understand why they chose that as well.

I'll be sticking to a basic text signature I think, rather than creating a 'picture' one.

Sorry to be a humbug Sad

ps: not that I'm saying the one Red just displayed looks tacky, he's made a rather simplistic thing look elegant, as per. I'll still stick to my text one unless ordered not to though, I think.

Would you consider giving it a whirl if Red comes up with something amazing? Which I'm sure he will! It's just that I'd prefer it that we all were recognised as being part of the same team. I agree that the lightsbares etc look pretty terrible but if we avoided that tackiness then I'm sure we could have something that looked really nice. Up to you mate of course I just thought it'd be nice if we all had the same.

How's this, then? Changed the circle bits to ones that look like crosshairs. The rest of the changes I fiddled with made it look worse, I thought. Apart from the colour scheme (shady and mysterious!).

Like LW has said, I think the ones that try too hard or go all out wacky just look tacky, so I've tried to keep it looking simple (I wont say 'elegant' cos that would be so /fail! lol).
I wanted to match the gradient shading on the bottom with the top line but you're only allowed 1000 characters max and that put it waaay over the limit! The blue funky characters on the lower line are there just for spacers and invisible on the proper forum pages (which are the lighter shade of blue surrounding the "Preview" header).

Red, could I ask a request here? (I ask it here rather than a PM because I wonder if others might feel the same).

Personally I really like the look of your signature and it makes me eat my hat a little with regards to saying these "text-based sigs usually look tacky" but I was wondering if upon final completion of this sig (and anyone who also makes any and posts them up) would it be possible for you to post the code here please?

Firstly to make it quick and easy for us to copy'n'paste it onto the SWTOR website but also so we could implement minor changes whilst using your code to make sure we keep it in the same style (ie: keep the font, colour, size etc the same).

I personally would like to replace the bottom bit (the motto) with a character name (ie: Ree'tak) or SWTOR login name (ie: Lunarwolf) so that it is more personalised and they dont all look the same.

(this of course, assumes that we don't want uniformity. If we DO all want uniformity it would still be helpful to have the code to cut 'n' paste).

Ta bud.

Yeah I was thinking about personalising mine as well. Instead of having the motto I'd quite like to have my rank title in mine.

Absolutely guys, I'm totally fine with that. I put the motto in cos it was one of the things listed as an option to include and I thought the Boss would want it there. Most of you know I'm not the biggest fan of the motto anyway, so I won't cry over it's loss! Haha!

Does anyone know how to put a version of the BB code on here without it trying to execute it, so it's just straight copy-and-paste-able text?

cheers Wehey! Thanks Nosyd – you're a genius!

So there it is in all it's glory! lol Feel free to butcher and dissect as you like (or as the Boss likes!). One tip though: If you're going with the code exactly as I've written it (with the motto) it's best not to align it to the right. The background's gradient change to a darker blue on the right makes the "invisible" blue spacers visible and looks awful.

Have fun folks!

Edit: No, hang on... It's put in whole bunch of spaces in amongst the code. That'll fudge it right up. Any solutions people?

I've just put it on my SWTOR forum sig, and it looks fine. Thanks Redwatch.
