Subject: Guild Site Front Page Thu Nov 12, 2009 8:36 am
I know that in the past we chatted about having a guild front page that could lead us, our visitors and friends to this forum but I couldn't find right the topic. Anyway if you're not sure what I'm talking about check out Kajidic's front page which leads onto thier main forum.
The reason I'm bringing this up is that I think one of my friends who works in website design might (with emphasis on might) be able to put one together for the guild. I haven't asked her yet but I should be seeing her Friday so I could discuss it then. I think just having a front page that leads to this forum might be a good plan.
So any ideas on what kind of design you think we should have if it's possible?
Personally I'd like to have a flash page where all of the letters of "Agents of the E.P.O.C.H" appear slowly on the screen at the start page. I assume most of you have seen the film Aliens so if you watch the opening credits you'll know what I mean. I like that effect as it always seemed really sinister to me. Obviously it would'nt be done in the same font etc. but hopefully you get the general idea.

Love the idea of a front page but please not as tacky as the Kajidic's one (no offence)

Oh god no, as much I appreciate the Kajidic's front page it's not particularly what I have in mind with loads of sliced up horror movies put on a video. We're an RP guild so it would have to be canon-friendly and more importantly it'd have to be a very serious-looking front page. As usual we'll be looking more along the lines of the 3 S's "Shadowy, Secretive and Sinister". Not so dark that it comes across as Sith but certainly close.

To be fair it's meant to be tacky, they're a comedy guild Shame they changed their music, that one belongs to Borderlands
As for a flash page? Aye I remember mentioning this in past threads.
I'd personally recommend a cool-as-funk cyberpunk-stylee initialisation program. Keep it clean and smexy-looking on a dark background, with writing (possibly in English and Galactic Basic?) coming up as if the person looking at the screen was splicing into a system; ending with a flashing "enter" button or something leading to these forums.
Quick, clean, classy.
Something like we have for the splicer, only animated; as if the "user" is really hacking into a security net, and it brings them here.

thats a cool idea LW, or at the end the Guild receptionist shows up and says welcome to EPOCH (Just need a Woman with a Sexy voice)

Aye the Cyberpunk style is what I was thinking too as it really is one of the biggest influences of the guild. I like the idea of having "Agents of the E.P.O.C.H" fading-in with Aurebesh and then having each letter switch into english to spell the guild name out. We'll definitely need a 'skip intro' button though. Something like the little target that Hare designed over the top if it would look pretty neat if it in more detail:

Aye, thats what I was getting at - a bit like on the front of the Timeline videos for TOR, except less "accessing database", more "splicing database"

Heheh that'd be cool, and then of course there's the option of music. Thats gonna be tough finding something dark, sinister and Star Wars that isn't related to the Sith. I'll have to have a dig about.

Hahaha! That was friggin' awesome. Even though I know they're a non-RP guild I do love the whole biker theme. Very imaginative for a PvP guild I'd say.

Actually I know we're going a bit off-topic here but the same girl that I'm going to ask to help with the front page also did this rendering with our Trance night flyers:

lol From the looks of her eyes in that dancing flyer I think she's taken something...
This seems like a good idea and very doable with forummotion allowing extra webpages. There's two vey different ideas being talked about here though. Minimalist Aliens-esque is completely different to a busy haking intro (even a glossy one).

Haha! Yeah I think think I remember seeing her at the night reaching for lasers....safe as @%. lol!
If L-Dubz means a similar kind of background but different and moving like a data stream I reckon I can see the two working together ok:
Obviously it'll have to be in reason with what she can actually do but I think the idea sounds pretty neat.

Well I think you're right that they would work together and you'd end up with a very neat slick looking package. I don't want to get arty-farty and obviously there's no 'right' answer but I think that the feel of the alien title is generated by the visual 'silence' surrounding the text reveal, which by merit of the word being the sole focus on the screen gives it that massive impact. I don't think it's possible to recreate that feel with using any visual preamble. But that's just an opinion^^

Well to be honest I was meaning a mix of the two - copeout eh?
I was meaning a blank screen where some writing appears after a blinking icon, a bit like a "dos" promp, and then could expand out with some translucent visuals.
I'm not doing great at explaining it, but I've also failed at finding examples to show you :S

Just a little update on this, I've been playing Mass Effect 2 and some of the loading screens reminded me of what I was trying to suggest for a front page, at least in part.
Most look like holograpgic diagnostics which, if they were less yellow/orange would look very Star Wars. Add to that a few faces and create a simple loop in flash and it could look the shizz.
I still like the idea of a front page that could link to things like our RP's, short stories, wiki, recruitment thread and the forums.
This is the sort of thing I am talking about:

Right I'm downloading the Fan site kit (I gave a false website) and it reminded me about this, also some TV project at my Uni reminded me off it as well but whatever. I'm going to have a root around for my copy of Flash tonight and maybe do and example or try see what I can come up with, either with found materials or stuff from the fan site kit.
If you have any preferences on what you'd like me to try just give me an idea LW, either way I'll be putting something together.

cooooooooooool
nothing specifically, when I was gonna try I was just gonna have someone logging into Holonet (all holo-green in colour) then the computer go mental and give a "Slicer" warning (going all red while it did it) then have it over-ride and go back to green as if someone had bypassed the security.
...Then the screen change to a simple 4-button option screen with Forums (here), Wiki, SWTOR.com and....something else perhaps.
I'll see if I can make an image in PS to show you what I mean.

I've just downloaded the fan site kit as well using www.agentsoftheepoch.org as the name of the site, after all it IS a fan site of sorts.
As for the guild front page I would like to see some kind of holographic images although they must remain Star Wars-y if we're using that image. Perhaps a holo image like this one would be quite a good way of making the guild name stand out:

Well I've gotten hold of Flash (thanks LW and Charada), so now all I need to do is slog through this thread and figure out what the hell you guys actually want
Currently I have an idea like his
1. I make a fake Holonet logon page (It'll look star wars maybe a advertisement running at the bottem like its a public terminal or something) 2. It freezes and bits of code start streaming across the page in the background and something like "splicing event taking place" pops up on screen? 3. Background changes to something else darker image maybe like a circuit bourd but all neonish? Then EPOCH slowly lights up like the Aliens title?
Along with all that some moving background images similar to ME2's, Tandos vid gave me a good idea about making it look like an actual screen and I can try some other effects through it.
Thats what I've put together in my mind from reading LW's post, I'm not sure if thats what you guys envisioned so if not tell me becuase I hav'nt started yet so its no trouble, what I would say is if you have an idea of what you want do a rough sketch of it on paint etc, just so I get the general layout of it.
I dont know how to integrate flash onto webpages so someone else will have to work that out I'm afraid

useful link on how to embed flash we'll need to buy a front page wont we though? no idea tbh
I know you said you wanted a hologram title SS but would you prefer something like this as you also mentioned you would like to to look steam punky earlier?
