| Well there is a great gun that tracks the target and the Preds are visable, but with Marines I think you'd have to stick together in order to survive long | |

Yeah the shotgun does work but really you dont want to be that close to anything to really use it The flame thrower just seems to bounce off enimies like the Pred not really had a chance to use it on a alien yet as it just blinds you and their hard enough to hit anyway. And yeah the hip mounted gun is great except its in a open kill zone so by the time you climb your way up there your usually dead, not to mention the pred recharges there as well meaning you seem to bump into them too much

| That is ridiculous. If they put a population cap on an MMO they're shooting themselves in the foot. "No, we have enough money now thank you. Go away." And to set a purposefully implemented cap so low as to max out after a few days... Stoo-piiid . ( ^Sour grapes; Harewood wants to be able to play when his copy arrives^ ) |

| Hare I normally find that the server is full from 9pm, mainly when the Yanks turn up but problems like this are to be expected on a MMO in it's first week, Aion had the same problem with server population issues | |

Wow didn't But then again that's the giant that is Blizzard I suppose. Still, Hare's right - in this day and age there is no excuse for that, be it ST:O, Aion or even some utterly unknown company producing and unknown mmo. After all, looking at the success of MMO's over the years, it wouldn't be exactly hard to get funding on a long-term budget? I hate to say it, but considering who made ST:O.....well lets just say "I'm not surprised." I'd love to be wrong though.

| I woundn't be surprise if SWTOR has some type of population cap at the beginning, WoW did have other problems so I've heard as for STO I've not crashed once and it's been one of the better launches I've been in. | |

| Really? Guess I must have been really lucky with WoW - I've been with them since the 2004 closed beta and never had a single issue (except a 10min wait to go through the Dark Portal when it first opened at midnight.)
One thing I REALLY hated about the other recent Cryptic Studios launch - being Champions Online - you actually needed a Credit Card to sign up, even to the trial - this is after you got your box through the post or download from steam btw - so if you didn't have a credit card, you couldn't play. You couldn't use a debit card or paypal or anything. Unbelievably they didn't fix this FOR A WHOLE WEEK and even then you had to phone a UK or US number (there were no others) to get a rep to "unlock" the game you just paid money for. I personally had to phone up and pretend to be 2 different people to help out some of my mates on steam - one from Sweden and the other from Italy because, believe it or not, Cryptic actually wanted them to phone the UK!
Unbelievably bad form in this day and age.
PLEASE tell me STO lets you sign up with more than just freakin' credit cards....PLEASE say they learnt from only 31% of people who bought the game actually continuing after the trial and subbing up? I quite like ST and I'd hate to see Cryptic balls it up...

| They added PayPal? Woohoo! I might actually be able to play it! £29.99 is a fair amount to pay if its not awesome though, I'll wait for those who already have it to put their verdict here; I'd like a game to play with EPOCHians though, I enjoyed the interaction we had going in lotro, even if the game itself got a wee bit dull. | |

| I've never personally been in an MMO at launch, so I've never had first hand experience of any type of problems or population cap.
I suspect it mainly for marketing purposes. They're probably wanting the gaming press to report that the 'response was overwhelming' and folks had to 'que for hours' to get into the game.
I just find it incredible that in this day and age an MMO would get a full release (ie past a capped beta phase) and restrict player nos. Isn't that part of what the open betas are for? To test the infrastructure and stress the servers? |

You'd think so Harewood, I get the impression there might be a "its not what you know but who you know" mentality in games design like the film industry (just a guess), so level headed comments like that would fly over the heads of project leads etc From an engineering management point of view you should be designing a product to have as few flaws (if any) before it hits the market, so if you have a specificly designated time to test a game online with people and you still can't or just arn't testing for problems you not managing the project very well

I'm quite enjoying it, myself. I've not gone mad playing it cos I've been kind of busy recently but I've had it for about a week and will probably continue with my subscription (in spite of a disgustingly horrendous crafting system). It'll certainly do for me till TOR comes out. So far I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10. |

| Eep! Bad crafting systems are actually a game breaker for me as I'm a big fan of it. Can you get by without crafting in STO? | |

| Yeah, easily. And there's so much moaining going about it on the forums that I'm sure they'll be quick to address it's short comings (fingers crossed!). I was very dissapointed because I love crafting too, but with replicators in the ST universe I can see why it's difficult for them to incorporate crafting. But spending hours collecting the bits and bobs and then having to use the first 'specialist' to make 7-8k credits worth of junk you neither want nor need before it lets you speak to the next specialist (lvl up). It's just clumsy and tacked on. Though like I say, the bonuses that I've seen for crafted stuff don't make it so important a part of the game (at least at the low level) and there're plenty of decent available things that make the time and effort seem pointless. Tis my opinion anyway! |
