PostSubject: Dynamic Roleplay   Dynamic Roleplay EmptyTue Jan 12, 2010 10:18 am

After the rather dissapointing release information about swtor being ready in 2011, I imagine some of you are as p*ssed off as I am, and the thought springs to mind:

"We've still got a lot of ground to cover....so what now?"

Well hopefully you've all noticed that here at E.P.O.C.H. we are a close-knit team who always try to keep things fresh, interesting and new. With that in mind I have an idea to spice things up and I'd like you folk's opinion.

You see, it's gonna take some doing, a lengthy project which I don't want to sink my teeth into unless people are gonna be interested in the end result.

Here's the idea:

Forumotion (the creators/suppliers of this website) have some features we dont currently make use of. Some of these include a character-sheet generator and dedicated dice-rolling system.

I'm considering creating another way to do Forum RP.

I'd like to make clear at this point that this is not to replace our current Forum-based RP, but rather to suppliment it, an alternative form of RP.

If Sure and I can figure out how these features work I am planning on creating an entire rules system based loosely around the existing STAR WARS: Saga Edition tabletop rpg so that you can have characters with characters sheets, points in skills and combat abilities and a working, breathing system for them to work in.

What will this mean? well, it would be a more streamlined version of our current Forum RP with combat, skill-checks, anything that has a chance factor involved. In our current "Story-based" RP, you have to use a certain amount of decorum when deciding if you hit someone wih a blaster-bolt for example, if you "always" hit thats a form of god-modding, but at the same time if you always miss that makes your character look incompitent. With what I am suggesting (using the above example) your character would have a cerain "score" in blaster usage and then would use the Dice Roller to see if you hit or not, just like in a normal tabletop rpg/computer game.

This type of RP would also benefit those people who like less story and more action because, although there will still be some writing to be done it wont be at the same level of our current "Story RP" because with that, its all about the writing.

Now the thing is, this will take some time for me to set up. I can't just use the SAGA edition rules because of copyright infringement so I am going to design this from the ground up. The good news is I've designed plenty of game systems / worlds for RPGs plus I'm using a pre-existing universe so this should be ready in 1-2 months rather than 5-6.

So what I want to know is would anyone be interested in this alternative 'dynamic' type of RP so they can get involved in more games at a faster pace?

If you could vote at the top of this page and also leave a reply, I'd appreciate it.

Once again, this is NOT to replace our current Story RP, it is to work alongside it.

Cheers,

L-Dubz

Well you know I like this idea, I am worried that it might extremely hard work to set up but when has that ever stopped us before? Wink

It'd be interested to see another form of RP making its way over to theRP section as well.

In short, hell yes this looks awesome. Very Happy

OFC you can but I'd suggest you don't if you are going for authenticity.

After all you might make Tando exceptionally good with both Rifles and dual pistols for example, and then when you get to TOR you find you can't even use dual pistols and it'll feel like a bit of your character is missing.

That's just a personal choice though, the other major reason is that by introducing dynamic combat into an RP means there is a chance of character death - I'd hate to see anyone die! lol

I'll personally make a different character for it, not use Aleena or Gideon. If they're gonna die, I'd prefer it in TOR where they can respawn Wink

Couldn't we just include our own characters and if death does (and prolly will) occur then just have it as though they're out of commision? Ya know, like soaking in a bacta tank somewhere? Wink

unconscious? then have a 2 week ban from using that character (maybe not as long as 2 weeks though)

This sounds hot, but it requires a GM with a lot of time on his hands. For my tabletop Star Wars game I've created a streamlined level-less, skill based system, based of d20 SAGA edition, so if you need any suggestions or input when creating yours...

Thanks for the input Sharasvar, I might well take you up on that Wink

Of course if this works it'll be open to x-guild rp so it'd be great to see you guys joining in if you're able.

As for a "gm with lots of time"? We've got so many people in this guild who manage to cram this place into the tiny portions of free time we get that it might just be do-able. For my part I work overnight and (if all hell is not breaking loose with ambulances, medication etc) its very, very quiet. I can often spare at least 2-3 per 10 hour shift.

I have to admit, I'm the guy who voted "No", but really, I'm more of a "Not sure". I'm quite settled in this type of RPing and this new idea may look flashy but I'm really not that sure as I'm quite comfortable with what I'm doing now (and it's still barrels of fun).

So it was YOU! lol j/k

tbh H2 I can appreciate where you are coming from (if it aint broke don't fix it), but in light of TOR suddently stretching out of view again I personally think we need to add to our repitoire a little.

You know I'll be the first to stand up for our story-based RP (I've been fighting its corner since I joined) which is why I don't want that to stop. I think our Story-RP is awesome and deserves its place.

However people have not got involved with the story-rp in the past because its either "too slow", they feel like they have to write virtual short stories all the time or feel its just not "their thing", many have people have said they will "rp in-game" but doing it this way doesnt feel right to them.

My plan with this is to offer those people (and everyone else) and alternative to the story rp if they dont happen to feel like delving that deeply into the SW universe, a quicker, more responsive RP that people can do battles in or defuse bombs, splice systems etc. The sort of thing that is very difficult to do in Story-rp as the results of such tasks can easily lead to god-modding or a GM being overly controlling. With the inclusion of a rule-set there becomes a sort of "impartial judge" because everyone sees the results.

Story-RP will always have its place but is a different beast altogether.

Would this be a case of adding in some 'dice rolls' to the story based RP or an entirely new approach? Hex mats and minifigs ftw!

Well I've started the preliminary work on this (seeing as the interest seems to be positive) and I can tell you that you're gonna get a 'species reveal' one hell of a lot quicker than you will from BioWare!

I don't want to release all the info yet, but here are some snippets on "Species":

No. of Species Available
:

38

Are Droids playable?:

Yes

Are all the races we've chosen (eg: Falleen, Umbaran etc) playable choices?:

Oh yes!

Yeah I'm up for this, never really had the chance to have a go with this type of stuff but been interested Smile

I'll offer you my services as well to help, 1. if you need help with finding out how to make it work on the site I'll give you a hand (not that I'm and expert but I managed to set up Vent easily enough so maybe I have the magic touch Razz )
I'm not sure what your talking about when you say Hex-grids but I used to dabble with flash, I'm not a designer ofc (is Hare?) but I might be able to put something together for you, flash is pretty intuitive but that said I'd have to find my (very legal *cough*) copy of it Smile

Flash is intuitive? Guess I'm dumb then! (don't answer that Razz)
I tried for ages with FlashMX and Dreamweaver and just gave up and went back to poser instead!

Help is of course appreciated, but at the moment I'm just doing the basics like working out a point-based rules system so any flashy stuff is a ways off.
